What is Burlesque? How did I get started?

Burlesque is an art form. It is the art of the tease. It allows the freedom to be sexy.

To be creative and to have fun .My goodness, I do it for the clothes alone! I do it for myself and for my lover. It’s great exercise (believe me!) and gives a wonderful boost of healthy self-esteem and confidence.

I studied with Ducky Doolittle, who has been a Burlesque performer and a teacher for over 12 years. She was the sex expert on the Ricki Lake Show, and lectures now all over the country. As a teacher, she made me and everyone who took her class know for a fact that Burlesque is so much more than what it appears. I have come to know as a teacher it is an incredible tool towards self-esteem and body acceptance.

The best Burlesque artists (in my opinion) are the ones that tease, and leave a lot to the imagination. Therein is the difference between Burlesque, and simply stripping. Burlesque takes thought, yet, it can be very simple. But fun, always fun.

A positive aspect which I take into the classes that I now teach is that each woman has her own private “this part of my body I hate” thought going on, which I know we can all relate to. By the end of my class, I want you to think every part of you is beautiful or at the very least, acceptable.

I have 22 years experience in the theater, 10 years in dance and have been performing and teaching burlesque for 3 years. The class is a different experience for different women. Some want to be Burlesque performers others just want to have a kick ass time and try something new. Here are some comments from some satisfied women.
